Black Bar & Grill Sydney Review

A refined dining experience worth trying

If you’re looking for a proper steak experience in Sydney,
Black Bar & Grill is one of those places that often comes up.

Located inside The Star in Pyrmont,
the moment you walk in, the atmosphere already feels different.
The lighting is dim and elegant, and the space between tables gives a sense of privacy,
making it perfect for a date night or a special occasion.

A strong start – bread and butter

One of the first things served was the complimentary bread and butter.

It might sound simple, but this was surprisingly memorable.
The butter was smooth, rich, and full of flavor,
melting effortlessly as soon as it touched the warm bread.

It was one of those small details that instantly made us feel
that the quality here would be consistent throughout the meal.

Entrée – a well-balanced start

We started with what seemed like a charcuterie-style entrée.

It included a selection of cured meats such as salami and prosciutto,
along with pâté, pickles, and accompaniments to enjoy with bread.

The combination worked really well —
the richness of the meats and pâté balanced nicely with the acidity of the pickles.

It’s the kind of dish that’s great for sharing and slowly easing into the meal.

Alongside it, there was also a seafood-style dish featuring lobster and roe,
which added a more premium touch to the overall experience.

The sauces – small detail, big difference

When the mains arrived, what stood out was the variety of sauces served together.

Instead of just one standard sauce,
there was a selection that allowed you to try different combinations:

  • A chimichurri-style green sauce, fresh and herbaceous
  • A BBQ-style red sauce, slightly sweet and rich
  • A mustard-based sauce, with a subtle sharpness
  • A creamy white sauce, smooth and mild
  • A brown gravy-style sauce, deep and classic

Each one brought out a different side of the steak,
making the same cut feel like a completely new dish each time.

Personally, the chimichurri worked best —
it added freshness and cut through the richness of the meat perfectly.

Mains – the highlight of the night

The main focus here is definitely the steak.

We ordered ours medium rare,
and it arrived with a beautifully seared exterior and a tender, juicy center.

You could really tell the quality of the meat was high.
It wasn’t overly complicated — just well-executed and full of natural flavor.

The sides, including vegetables and baked dishes, were simple but well-prepared,
complementing the steak without overpowering it.

Pricing

This is definitely a higher-end restaurant.

Approximate pricing:

  • Steaks: $60 – $120+
  • Entrées: $20 – $40
  • Sides: $15 – $20
  • Desserts: $18 – $25

For two people, you’re realistically looking at around
$150 – $250+ depending on your order.

It’s not an everyday dining spot,
but for a special occasion, it feels justified.
